I Smell Like Dirt

Love this saying: "In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." ~Margaret Atwood

Ahhh oui mesdames, mon cheri and moi have been getting our hands and fingernails dirty indeed. These last two weekends, we have been enjoying lots of sunshine that we literally smell like dirt and sweat working in notre jardin.

First, we hung two of these old chippy, flaky and rusty doors -

Next, we put together two of these raised garden kit, as I'm sloooowly removing my front lawn.

Then, I found these super cute plant markers, perfect for the garden boxes

And VOILA! After seven days...from seeds to seedlings

I'm loving these bachelor buttons!

Believe it or not, when we got rid of our sidewalk lawn, I wouldn't have thought, all these California native wildflowers would thrive.

And these were all from seeds that I scattered just around three months ago.

Here are a few more happy vegetation replacing the front lawn

And of course my lavenders are just growing like crazy!!!

Finally, happy to announce that our property is now a "certified wildlife habitat" from the state of California. Haha! It's really not a big deal...it just means that our garden provides food, water, cover and a safe home for wildlife to raise their young. Remember the hummingbird family that survived in our avocado tree? That's what it's all about!

I so know what you mean by the "dirt smell"! & even though I am wearing snug garden gloves - dirt still gets under my nails....why is that? You have been really busy...that raised bed is awesome...& those doors and chairs are so charming...looking forward to seeing your garden grow! Thanks for linking up to the garden party!!!!! I've never heard of that before...a certified wildlife habitat in someones yard. I think that is a big deal! I would love to receive such an honor. We hope to eliminate lawn with florabunda someday too. Your gardens are just beautiful! If we lived closer my hubby could have built you some garden boxes. He's a carpenter and had always built our raised beds in every home we've lived in. He does a great job. I do love those chippy white doors...they add such romance. ox

Looks like your hard work paid off. Your garden looks beautiful. There is nothing more wonderful than smelling dirt from the garden. Well there is the scent from clothes drying on the outside line or the scent of a little baby on a good day. HA! HA!

Oh my what a gorgeous garden you have...I have to show hubby this post so he can see the doors you have hung, I am planning an outdoor room (potting area/ shade house) that I would love to have doors just like these ones.

Congrates on the habitat sign...it is always wonderful to know that others are working to provide safe havens for our wildlife too...I want to get one of the signs for our resident gopher turtle (hubby is reluctant about the sign)...I am planning a post about her (?) soon, just waiting to get a couple more photos to share...for a turtle she sure can move quickly away from my camera lol.

As far as the photo collages go, I just did the free download Picasa 3. They have a little help there too for how to make the collages. Once I caught on it was so easy.
Thank you for coming by...

Hello Marie,
Just love your whimsy in your garden - the doors look wonderful - a true secret garden - the raised beds are going to be great - love the cloches - I figure this time of the year - my hands will have very short nails and yes, I too will smell like dirt - heavenly,
Hope you have a marvelous day,
Kathy

I think that is great to be a certified habitat. It would be nice to be able to remove the sidewalk lawn here but we can't...

Oh Marie, I would love to have a garden that looks like yours! I don't have as green a thumb as you obviously do, and I'm in a constant battle with weather and deer. I keep trying! I also love what you do with doors and shutters and such. I've also wanted to mention to you that my very best friend from high school lives in Carlsbad. Hubby and I have been to Carlsbad a few times and just love it there. I'm going to ask my girlfriend if she's every seen your darling house.
